Our Opinions Have No Permanence

May 4, 2020

This writing came from my 2020 monthly TAO calendar. The title came from a couple paragraph’s from the writings of Chuang Tsu, Chapter 2

Great knowledge is all-encompassing; small knowledge is limited. Great words are inspiring; small words are chatter. When we are asleep, we are in touch with our souls. When we are awake, our senses open.

We get involved with our activities, and our minds are distracted. Sometimes we are hesitant, sometimes underhanded, and sometimes secretive. Little fears cause anxiety, and great fears cause panic. Our words fly off like arrows, as though we knew what was right and wrong. We cling to our point of view, as though everything depended on it. And yet our opinions have no permanence; like autumn and winter, they gradually pass away. We are caught in the current and cannot return. We are tied up in knots like an old clogged drain; we are getting closer to death with no way to regain our youth. Joy and anger, sorry and happiness, hope and fear, indecision and strength, humility and willfulness, enthusiasm and insolence, like music sounding from an empty reed or mushroom rising from the warm, dark earth, continually appear before us day and night. No one knows whence they come. Don’t worry about it! Let them be! How can we understand it all in one day?

I love how wraps it up with Don’t worry about it! Let them be. As most of you know my acronym for BE is Breathe & Expand. Really that’s all we can do right now, isn’t it? I have read from many different sources that the energy of May is about self-reflection. [click on links below]

When I ponder self-reflection, I ask myself, how to I feel? Then I check with my senses, not my mind. Which brings me to a quote, I have been using this week for classes.

“Lose your mind and come to your senses.”
~Friz Perls

Qigong and T’ai Chi are about connecting with our breath and expanding our awareness with our senses. Asking ourselves, the simple yet complex questions of feeling. How often throughout the day to you find yourself checking in with your heart? your mind? your breath? your body? your spirit? OR, are you keeping yourself so busy that you are not feeling and just moving?

I invite you to do some self-reflection this month and SLOW DOWN to BE. Below are a couple websites, I love with more details about the energy of May. I have given you a quick glimpse into their energy reports, but for more insight, click on their respective links.

This is a month that supports internal self-observation and reflection offering deep insights into who you are and what you are doing in your life. It is a time of preparation for breakthroughs and the potential for more dramatic change coming in the next few months. If you use this time wisely, you can align yourself with your own authentic self that is based on your own current truth rather than old patterns and outdated belief systems.

May will see people go deeper — the surface reactions and ripples of this time will be quieter and less frequent but this time will carry new DEEP undertows — new stage of the CHANGE process. This will lead to deeper awareness of changes needed to be made personally, collectively and also revelations — both your own and those from others.

  1. Great reminder of not understanding everything all at once. And so glad for what May brings. Thanks Toni!

    • Yes and “understanding in one day,” how profound is that? It seems we want answers like a Google search, an immediate gratification. Where the real wisdom comes in the unknowing trust.
